Boners Part 2

Welcome to my blog post this week.  I'm going to continue talking about bone players that I like and hopefully you will like too.

This week I'd like to talk about Mr David Gibson.  I was lucky enough to see Dave Gibson play at the Fat Cat in 2010.  Here is a pic from that gig -

Dave Gibson/Jared Gold Quintet @ Fat Cat, July 3, 2010

Gibson originally from Oklahoma is now based in New York City.  He currently has 5 albums that he's released as a leader with the most recent of these being End of the Tunnel.

End of the Tunnel (Posi-Tone Records, 2011)

You can check out the other 4 albums here.  I have all of them and recommend all of them, but his last two are particularly good with the same band playing on both records.

I'm not going to say too much about David Gibson.  I'll post a few different videos and let them do the talking for me.  If you haven't heard Gibson before I hope you listen carefully and really check him out - he's such a soulful player and everything he plays has so much behind it, nothing fake here.

David Gibson along with Michael Dease is one of the reasons I got myself a Rath R4 trombone.  Michael Rath makes great trombones and these guys certainly get the most out of these beautifully made instruments.  Dease and Gibson feature on an album together along with James Burton III with a group simply entitled American Rath.  The album is called Going Somewhere and you can read a little more about the project here.  It's also available for purchase from Dillon Music.

Check out this very soulful video of David Gibson playing solo on the tune Autumn Leaves -

Here's a video from the recording session of Gibson's 2009 album A Little Somethin' -

Here is Gibson with the George Gee orchestra with whom he performs for regularly.  Check out his solo on the classic Blues in Frankie's Flat -

Here are a couple of videos of David Gibson with Victor Jones.  Enjoy!!

Well I think I've shown you enough that you can see and hear the class and skill that David Gibson plays with.  If you still want to see more then type his name into youtube and go nuts.  Meanwhile if you follow this link you should be able to see a video of me playing/hacking along to a David Gibson solo I transcribed about a year and a half ago.

You can also check out David Gibson at his website - http://jazzbone.org/ and/or "Like" him on Facebook - David Gibson Facebook Page
